Reviews of Pubs and Breweries

Tennessee

Boscos - 2120 Madison Ave. Memphis 901-432-2222

Located east of downtown Memphis in the Overton Square neighborhood. The brewery has operations in Memphis, Little Rock, and Nashville. Beer selections include: Ed's Porter, American Wheat, India Pale Ale, Isle of Skye Scotch Ale, Famous Flaming Stone Ale, and Seasonals. All the beers were clean with no off flavors noted. The Flaming Stone Ale is their signature beer - that utilizes heated stones which are added to the brew to carmelize the sugars. The sample I had was okay, but it sounded like a lot of work went into it and resulted in an ordinary tasting beer. I thoroughly enjoyed the porter, ipa, and the seasonal - which was a Weizenbock.
Of the 3 brewpubs I visited, this was the best.

Gordon Biersch - Located downtown just off Beale Street.

Gordon Biersch is a chain, similar to Rock Bottom, but they specialize in brewing mainly German lagers. The most disappointing thing here was the temperature of the beer.....ice cold !! I had trouble tasting any of the samples. Once they warmed up a bit, I gave the Dunkles and Marzen a decent review. The lighter beers would be best consumed on your lawnmower on a 90 degree day.

HOPS - Another (Southern) brewpub chain.

The brewpub is located about 12 miles s.e. of downtown off the I-240 Loop. I sampled 5 beers ...(3) of which had very little taste or color. I'm not sure why they bother to brew these....they tasted like diluted Coors Light. Their special was named Alligator Ale.....an okay dark Amber....but not really true to any style that I could discern.

As a side note, Memphis has a Flying Saucer beer emporium....also located just north of Beale Street. They have 80 handles and another 80+ bottle selections. Outside of Bosco's, I'd drink there.
